🌿 CORNIGLIA
The Cinque Terre village suspended between vineyards and the sea
Corniglia is the most distinctive village of the Cinque Terre. Unlike the other four villages, it does not sit directly on the seafront, but stands on top of a rocky promontory about 90 metres above sea level, surrounded by terraced vineyards and typical Mediterranean vegetation.
Its unique location offers spectacular views of the coastline and a quieter, more intimate atmosphere. The village develops mainly along Via Fieschi, a narrow street that runs through the historic centre to the panoramic Santa Maria Terrace.
📍 What to see in Corniglia
⛪ Church of San Pietro
One of the village’s main landmarks is the Church of San Pietro, built in the 14th century and considered an interesting example of Ligurian Gothic architecture.
The church stands on the remains of an earlier 11th-century chapel and contains architectural elements added over the following centuries.
🏘️ Largo Taragio
Walking along Corniglia’s characteristic caruggio, you will reach Largo Taragio, the village’s main square.
Here you will find the War Memorial and the Oratory of Santa Caterina, built in the 18th century. It is one of the most pleasant corners of the village, perfect for taking a break and enjoying the authentic atmosphere of the Cinque Terre.
🌊 Santa Maria Terrace
Continuing along Via Fieschi, you will reach the Santa Maria Terrace, located about 90 metres above sea level.
From this panoramic viewpoint, you can enjoy magnificent views of the Cinque Terre coastline and the Ligurian Sea.
🏰 The Tower
Near Largo Taragio, you can visit the remains of the ancient defensive tower, which once formed part of the Genoese fortifications dating back to the 16th century.
From the area around the tower, you can enjoy beautiful views of the sea and the coastline towards Manarola.
🌊 Corniglia Marina
Although the village sits high above the sea, Corniglia has its own small marina.
From Largo Taragio, a staircase leads down to the Marina di Corniglia, a small rocky cove with a tiny harbour mainly used by local residents.
🪜 The famous Lardarina
One of Corniglia’s best-known features is the Lardarina, the long staircase connecting the railway station with the centre of the village.
It consists of 33 flights and 377 steps and is one of the most characteristic ways to enter Corniglia. Alternatively, you can reach the centre by following the road that climbs up from the station.
🍇 Vineyards and landscape
Corniglia is surrounded by the typical terraced vineyards of the Cinque Terre, supported by ancient dry-stone walls.
Its history is deeply connected with agriculture and wine production. The origins of the village date back to Roman times, and its name may derive from the Gens Cornelia, a Roman family believed to have owned land in this area.
Corniglia’s winemaking tradition is very ancient. Wine from the area is even mentioned by important Italian literary authors, including Giovanni Boccaccio in the Decameron.
🥾 Panoramic hiking trails
Corniglia occupies a central position among the villages of the Cinque Terre and is connected to Vernazza by one of the most scenic hiking trails in the area.
The trail passes through vineyards, Mediterranean vegetation and spectacular stretches between the mountains and the sea, offering magnificent views of the coastline.
🚆 How to reach Corniglia from La Spezia
The easiest way to reach Corniglia is by train.
From La Spezia Centrale, you can travel along the Cinque Terre railway line and get off directly at Corniglia station.
Once you arrive, you can reach the historic centre by climbing the famous Lardarina or by taking the road that connects the station with the village.
💙 Why visit Corniglia

Here you will not find a village built directly around a harbour, but a small historic village perched high above the sea, surrounded by caruggi, panoramic terraces, vineyards and traditional Ligurian houses.
Take a leisurely walk along Via Fieschi, stop at Largo Taragio and make your way to the panoramic terrace to admire the sea from above.
